'MAKE DO'

The power of social networking

An update of what I've been working on recently...

I decided to look at the power social networking has on today's society. I find it interesting how status updates about small, insignificant things are constantly viewed by millions of people each day and how these statuses result in us wasting a considerable amount of time on social networking sites. I decided to take some of the ridiculous statuses that were on my news feed on facebook and screen print them onto newspapers to contrast the power of facebook over the news. This is still to be developed and completed.

LONDON TO WINDSOR BIKE RIDE

I did the London to Windsor Bike Ride yesterday which was 37 miles long. With no training I wasn't expecting to actually finish it, but I did! It was such an amazing day. Bring on next year!

V&A - Designers of the future exhibition 15th June – 31st July

Currently at the V&A museum located in the Sacker Centre - Room 220

'This display showcases work by art and design students from the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art inspired by the V&A and its collections. A related conference exploring museum and higher education collaboration will take place in July 2010.'

A typographic screen-printed triptych of our favourite design quotes. Our inspiration came from the Mamluks 14th Century Qur’an, found in the Islamic Art section at the V&A. Inspired by the impressive craftsmenship and technique displayed in the Mumluks Qur’an we wanted to render these design quotes in a way that would highlight our precious designs and craftmenship as future designers!

In collaboration with Ally Carter and Kelly Satchell.

History of Art & Design Invitation

After a long time spent in letterpress trying to line all the type up, I have finally finished it... An invitation for the History of Art and Design. The idea was to lay out the invitation in a similar format to an essay highlighting the keywords as students would go through this process in preparation for their dissertations.

Canada

A few photos from my trip to Canada, I will upload some more when I have sorted them out. Niagara Falls was amazing. I went in a helicopter over the falls, the maid in the mist into the falls and through the tunnels under the falls, an all round great experience!

Letterpress

I decided to take time away from my computer and be more creative with my hands! A few days spent in letterpress and I created an old theatre ticket to use for the Backstage Brighton brief. Work is to be done towards the final book cover. There was something very satisfying about typesetting (in the good old fashioned way) and spending the day away from my laptop. Definitely a place where I will be hiding away more often.

Amsterdam

An amazing study trip to Amsterdam. Such an inspiring place!
We visited a range of studios and gained lots of motivation. My particular favourite was Cobbenhagen Hendriksen. Chantel guided us through what she believed were their successful projects and their not so successful projects. This made me realise how a lot of design work is based on opinion, which further made me think about my own work and working style a bit more. With her experience of being a typography lecturer at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and working with students, Chantel was really able to give us a good understanding of the next steps we should be taking.

Soundwaves

A live brief to create a new identity for the Soundwaves Festival 2010. We took a radio apart and used what we found inside to try and create some abstract imagery to represent what the clients wanted. They expressed it was a festival that presented 'unusual music', we therefore used this expression as our starting point. A collaboration with Heather Webster.

Drop it like it's hot

A type project where we had to produce a broadsheet on a particular typeface. I had Old English, which I discovered was used on Snoop Dogg's artwork. It's strange to see how an 'Old English' typeface is today used by an American rapper.
